Observation Tutorial

Do you cut through your park on the way to work, walk your dog or exercise, or go to the playground with your kids on a daily basis?

If you visit your local park regularly, you are most likely already taking note of park conditions that you see. Are you discouraged by overflowing trashcans, or dry grassy areas? Perhaps there is new graffiti tagged on a wall, a fallen tree limb, or missing slats on a park bench? These are exactly the types of conditions you should report through ParkScan!

For a tutorial on how to Send an Observation, follow the easy steps below:

Park Name

Choose the name of the park for which you are submitting an observation from the pull-down menu or from the map.

Your Email

Enter your email address in the box. Your email will not be seen by the public.

Observation Details

In this step, you can report several observations about the same park at one time.

Click Add to place a dot on the map. Click the correct location of the issue you observed to move the dot. You can change the location of the dot by clicking another spot. You can place the dot anywhere you wish for general comments and staff compliments.

Once you are satisfied with the location of the red dot. Click Edit. You will see a pop up window where you will be prompted to choose the observation's location and condition, write comments, and indicate whether or not it is a safety hazard.

  • Location: Select the location or park feature/amenity from the pull-down menu. If the precise location is not listed, select 'Other' and describe the location in the Comments field. Please be as specific as possible, including the estimated proximity to a park landmark, such as a playground, drinking fountain, corner of the park or street intersection.
  • Condition: Next select the condition from the pull-down menu. If the condition you are reporting is not listed, once again select 'Other' and enter details in the Comments field.
  • Comments: Add specific information that you feel will help City staff address the issue you are reporting. Please be as detailed as possible.
  • Hazard: If a maintenance issues poses an immediate or impending threat to public safety or health, please flag the issue by selecting yes. This site is not intended to report police or fire emergencies. Instead, please call 911.
  • Photos: Attaching digital photos enhances your observation by providing park staff with a visual description of the condition you are reporting on. To attach your photos, click on the Browse button and search your computer for the jpeg image file you need. You can attach up to two images. If you do not have any digital photos, you can skip this step.

Then click Finished and the pop up window will close.

Additional ParkScans

If you want to submit another observation for the same park, click on Add under Observation Details.

General Comments/Compliments

For general comments and compliments, place the red location dot wherever you please on the map, then use the Comments box on the Edit screen to submit your ParkScan. There is a Compliment option in the Conditions pick list.

Send Observation

After you have added all the observation details for your ParkScans, click the Send Observation button.
