Safety & Visitor Tips

Important guidelines for a safe and enjoyable visit

Bring plenty of water; desert heat is intense. Carry at least 1 gallon per person per day, even for short hikes.

Wear sunscreen, hat, and proper footwear. The desert sun can be harsh, and temperatures can reach over 100°F in summer.

Stay on marked trails to preserve fragile ecosystems. Off-trail hiking damages biological soil crusts that take decades to recover.

Avoid mid-day hikes in summer; go early or late. The coolest parts of the day are early morning and evening.
